About Us

What we do

The Mothers’ Union has over 3.6 million members in 77 countries.  Our lives and experiences of the MU may differ widely but we are united by our shared belief in the importance of the family in God’s world and the fellowship of belonging to a Christian organisation which welcomes all - men and women, married and single - and who believe in the importance of Christian family life.

The MU worldwide:

  • Promotes the development of prayer and spiritual growth.
  • Has a consultative role at UN and national level.
  • Enables and empowers women in their daily lives and raises awareness of women’s issues.
  • Fights against the stigma of HIV/AIDS.
  • Runs Literacy and Development Programmes.
  • Resources its members for practical action

The MU in Swansea and Brecon:

  • Promote the development of prayer and spiritual growth through quiet hours, monthly Eucharist and retreats
  • Provide start up packs for young people leaving care for their own homes.
  • Run a play area in Swansea Prison.
  • Offer holidays to families under stress.
  • Support families at refuge centres.
  • Knit clothes for premature babies
  • Raise funds for overseas projects

Membership

Branch membership

The first branch of the MU in Wales was formed in Llandrindod Wells,  in 1884, and there are now 55 branches with 1440 members.

Diocesan membership

There are 47 Diocesan Members who fall into these categories:

  • Members whose branch has closed.
  • Members who do not wish to be part of a group and attend meetings but who would like to show their support by being part of a project.
  • Members who have time to give in reading MU literature like Home and  Family and Encompass and who are willing to support the MU with their money and prayers.

Diocesan Members receive regular mailings, which include newsletters, Easter and Christmas greeting cards and new promotional material.

IMPC membership

These are members who can no longer attend meetings because they are housebound through age, illness or because they are carers. There are  members of IMPC (Indoor Members Prayer Circle). These Members receive Christmas and Easter Greetings, a Newsletter and Prayer booklet. They provide prayerful support for the ongoing work of the MU in the diocese.
