Prayer and Spirituality

All our work is upheld by prayer and the MU promotes the development of prayer and spiritual growth for its members .

  • members at 2006 retreatAn overnight Retreat is held annually, at Llangasty Retreat House, near Brecon.
  • A Day Retreat is held during Advent, usually somewhere in the Gower.
  • Members (branches and deaneries) organise Quiet days.
  • Quiet times are held each autumn – two in the south and two in the north of the dioceses.
  • Locally based Festival Services are held in each Deanery, during the year and these are a wonderful opportunity for fellowship between local branches.
  • The Committee has a emergency prayer chain to pray for people, quickly, in times of specific need.  
  • The Committee organises and resources the annual Wave of Prayer when members pray for our link dioceses of Nairobi, Mombasa, Machakos and Kitui (in Kenya)  and  Bunbury and Perth (in Western Australia).
  • A monthly service of Holy Eucharist is held lunchtime in St Mary’s Swansea  (First Friday of each month) and the Cathedral, at Brecon (Third Friday of the month.)  Members participate by reading lessons and leading the Midday prayers.
  • During each three-year period, there is a Diocesan Festival, an Archideaconal Festival and a Rally so that members can meet from all over the diocese can meet together for faith and fellowship.

Policy

The Mothers’ Union periodically distributes discussion papers on various issues that effect family life, in order to obtain feedback from members and formulate a policy on that issue.  Discussion papers have included:

  • Drugs
  • The Gambling Bill
  • Cohabitation – should cohabitees have the same rights as married couples?
  • Single Parent Families
